What is hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding is a way of rapidly planting seeds over a large area. The process involves using a high-pressure hose to apply seeds in the soil. The spray that comes out of the hose is known as slurry and contains the seeds along with mulch, fertilizer, lime or other substances to get the seeds off to a healthy start.

While it is typically used for grasses, wildflower seeds can also be added to the slurry to add beautiful pops of color in the lawn.

Hydroseeding wouldn’t be as popular as it is if it didn’t have a number of advantages over laying sod or spreading seeds. Here are a few reasons to consider hydroseeding:

• Speed: The top reason to choose hydroseeding over spreading seed or laying sod is that it’s 50 percent faster than traditional methods. Additionally, the additives in the slurry help the seeds take root much faster than if you were to spread seeds and cover them with hay or straw. You can expect to see the grasses or wildflowers sprout in three to five days.
• Efficiency: The hay or straw used to protect newly-spread seeds can help keep birds at bay, but a strong gust of wind can easily blow the hay and seeds off the ground, leaving your lawn bare. Since the seeds take root almost immediately, hydroseeding is much more effective.
• Versatility: As we mentioned above, hydroseeding can be used to spread any seeds you can think of. It’s not uncommon for homeowners to choose to blend different seeds in the slurry to give their lawn a unique appearance over their neighbors’ properties.
• Safety: When some folks learn what hydroseeding is, they often assume that the slurry mix is full of dangerous chemicals. That couldn’t be further from the truth! The slurry mixture is non-toxic and completely safe. Even though it sticks to the soil, you don’t need to worry about the mixture staining your driveway or siding of your home.
• Cost: Hydroseeding is more expensive than spreading seed by hand, but it’s a quarter of the price of laying sod. Since it’s easier to install and there’s no maintenance required, the convenience of hydroseeding is practically worth the price.

Can I hydroseed my lawn by myself?

The DIY-ers out there will be happy to learn that hydroseeding can be done without professional help. Renting or buying all of the necessary equipment can be a way to save some money; however, DIY hydroseeding doesn’t always yield the best results.
